I have the fastest internet in Australia, ADSL2+ modem this is my setup

Upstairs main computer is connected to modem, also connected to the modem is a wireless router which is meant to send signal downstairs.

Downstairs has signal strength 30% but cannot connect to the net.

What is the proper configuration to do this. SHould windows detect IP address or should this be manual. Should my main computer upstairs be involved in the network or can downstairs just pick up the signal

Any help greatly appreciated.

Configure your router to handle all of the traffic in your home by connecting the router to the DSL modem, and then both computers connect to the router. Make sure that the DHCP server in your router is on, and then configure both computers to automatically assign the IP.

Also, on your downstairs computer, make sure that under your browser's connection settings, that you set it to automatically discover your proxy settings. this is a common solution to internet connectivity.

Good luck!

Tracy L is on the right track.
Wireless router should be the only device pugged into the modem's internet port.
The router will do DHCP for your internal LAN-both the wired desktop and the wireless one downstairs.
30% isn't a very good signal strength, but it should be enough to get you connected. Try repositioning the wireless router, tilt the antenna down, find a location downstairs where the signal is a little stronger.
Log into the web interface of the router. See if encryption is turned on. If it is, turn it off and try connecting again-you can turn it on later in the router as well as matching the settings in your wireless adapter.

Ok, I;ll ask, how do two computers connect to a modem?. Is that really a router also? If so you have router conflicts. Since normally a modem will only have ONE connection. If you have multiple outlets then that "Modem" is a router. And if you add a SECOND router you have to be very careful to set it up correctly or it simply won't work! (It wont let you connect to the net!)

In the newly added router, try turning off all DHCP and NAT functions. If it allows you to change it from router mode to gateway or even better "Bridge" mode do so.

Otherwise you will have to set up a "second" network and be sure the second router is not attempting to run DHCP within the same network as the "Modem/router" settings.

Just a guess but highly probable if the MODEM has more than one outlet!

See this question if you really have two routers!

Like everyone is saying, you should have one modem and one router. then connect all the computers to ONE router.

To get the best and fastest connection you should use a wired connection.
If the signal has to travel through walls and floors, you will lose signal as you see. Move the computer to the same floor as the router or as close as possible to it.
You can also buy signal boosters.

Your modem should be connected to the router and your computer into the router. The modem should be in bridge mode and the router should handle the internet connection.

Your ISP should be able to walk you thru the set up procedures.

Does your modem have a built in switch (router) because I am having a hard time understanding how you are using two feeds off a single modem, if this is the case you are probably having some IP conflicts.

As far my experience the 30% signal is enough to get connection to the internet even the message low connection you can still can connect to the net. Maybe you need to configure the ip manually or you need to get the repeater or a booster.

(warning - form of a protracted reaction. Sorry) If there are not any steps being taken to cease the biting - you have each the excellent option to get rid of your son and would not sense undesirable approximately it. additionally, if the instructor (aka the different boy's mom) did not additionally be conscious the biting the 1st time that sounds like a crimson flag. the place become she? besides the incontrovertible fact that if there are steps being taken and that's been 2 circumstances so a methods, that's achievable the two one in all you are able to artwork something out. As for drawing near the instructor - ask if the two one in all you are able to chat. clarify that your son had come homestead two times with nasty looking chew marks and which you do not want that to proceed. Say which you enjoyed the assumption of the day care there, and you like her as a instructor yet you are able to't proceed sending your son there if her son retains biting. in case you want, consult along with her regarding the biting and what circumstances brought about it. See if she and you'd be able to arise with some ideas of the thank you to handle it and cease it (ie: a visit, assisting look after the boo boo, etc). Her son is probable biting out of frustration. that's rather undemanding at that age, exceptionally if there's a speech postpone. Giving your son and her son some "keyword phrases" would help. coaching "cease" and "that hurts me" on your son and training the different boy to apply his words somewhat then chew (proportion, please, my turn) etc. Sharing is troublesome at that age - they simply approximately continually want somebody to mediate for them. that's probable something that desires to be worked on. Introduce "determining to purchase and promotion" and taking turns "in 2 minutes" will help too. that's as much as you in case you want to grant them yet another risk or merely pull him out after the 1st assembly. individually - i'd sense it out throughout the 1st assembly then make a selection. wish that enables. stable success!
