In class, there is a debate, pretending that we are the cabinet for the times of Jefferson. My argument is to start a war, on France or Great Britain. Both is also and option. I would like maybe some good debating tips, or why a war on two countires at the same time.

Thanks for your time! :)

you might try to show all the possible reasons that have made you come to a decision to go to war. in order to protect you views try to also find out why you shouldn't and try to counter that. Don't try to make your opponent look small because then it shows that you are weak. make sure you are up to date on the events that occurred during that time period.

If it MUST be at least one, definitely Britain--France is your friend and about to sell you Louisiana which will double the size of your new country. Best actually to not fight either, but if you have to choose, go after the Brits. Always try to avoid a war on two fronts--Germany did that in 1940 (France) and 1941 (Russia)--THEY LOST !!

I think you need some war aims. Of course it did happen in 1812 when the US invaded Canada.

I think war against Britain and France would have been madness, the US needed French support, why would you want to fight France, your major ally?

I wouldn't declare war on both countries, because the U.S. would lose for sure.
