Uniformitarianism is a concept in historical geology that says that the layers of the earth were formed by slow, steady processes and that major catastrophic events were rare. Not saying much, really, but it comes from an era where the Biblical Flood was supposed to have been a real event. The Flood idea is usually referred to as 'catastrophism'.

The closest I can come is "uniformitarianism," which apparently has to do with geology. That might set you on the right path if it rings a bell.
