Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed for supplying atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. The case against Ethel was thin, so thin even J. Edgar Hoover didn't think they'd get a conviction. The case against him was stronger, and subsequent investigation has borne it out. They were brought into it by Ethel's brother, David Greenglass, who worked on the project. Both had been members of the Communist Party USA in the thirties, a lot of people had. The operatives from the NKVD and the KGB who have spoken about it since the collapse of the USSR have said that CPUSA members were not engaged in espionage, and anyone who was so engaged first separated themselves from the organization completely before any activities began. This makes sense, because membership would have been, if you'll pardon the expression, a red flag.

I'm not sure that anyone was executed for being a communist during the McCarthy era. It was more of a legal thing, and a lot of people were blacklisted or lost jobs, but no Americans were executed because of McCarthyism.
Perhaps you are thinking of the Soviet spies, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were charged with stealing atomic bomb secrets for the Soviets and later executed.
