It depends on the protein. Some proteins, like actin, become the cytoskeleton of the cell. Some, like integrins, become lodged in the membrane of the cell where they act as signalling molecules. Some are dumped outside of the cell, like digestive enzymes or hormones. Others, like enzymes, remain in the cell to regulate its functions. Every gene in your DNA produces a protein (or part of a protein), so there are lots of different types of proteins with lots of different functions.
