They did. Look at the 400 pictures that are posted on the My Yahoo pages from AP Their Lead Photo). You will see there are about a dozen showing firefighters doing exactly that.

Think of an all brick home. No need for flame retardant because bricks don't burn, right. But everyone would not like to sleep on bricks and use bricks for covers. Even if the house was make of inflammable materials, our furniture, clothes and everything else would burn. Even the clothes firefighters wear will burn, it only resist fire.

If you are thinking of covering the homes with the foam they use to put out gas fires like aircraft fires. Next time you see one, note how fast it dissolves. You would need a couple of fire trucks at each house with an unlimited supply of water. There is not enough fire trucks in the whole country for that and there is usually not enough water at most locations.

Cost could be a big factor involved in why it is not used. I think you are referring to the type of fire retardant that is blown onto beams in the large office buildings, to keep them from collapsing in case of fire. In some fires there is not much that can stop it, such as in the case of 9-11 when the towers were hit by a fully loaded plane of jet fuel, an extremely hot burning fuel. Or the wildfires in California where it is extremely dry, and a strong wind fans the flames and it moves so quickly. You could consider a whole house sprinkler system they are starting to become very common in new, and remodeling of older homes.

The foam will disintergrate over time. And its a wast of foam if the fire does not end up going onto the home. The best thing to do is to hose down your house to protect it from f;ying embers. 1 ember can start a entire house fire.

they should...they need to make it more mainstream. It is still a specialized industry and that makes it rather expensive. Hopefully that will change!
