Multi-tube artillery rocket launcher. It was not a mortar, you did not drop the rounds in the muzzle. It was loaded, aimed then fired electrically. Inspired byt the Russian Katyusha rockets, it was cheap, simple and effective. They came in several different sizes, both in terms of rocket diameter and number of tubes per launcher. If I remember correctly the name translates literally to "smoke weapon".

No, the Nebelwerfer was not like our bazooka, that was the Panzerfaust. The Neberlwerefer was a multi-barreled (5 - 10) mortar projector. It produced a screeching noise when fired, so it was dubbed the "Moaning Minnie."
