It's probablybecause of political correctness. People were afraid that kids would actually IMITATE things they saw toons doing and hit each other with hammers, etc.

(Boy, isn't it insulting how stupid they think we are...?)

The same kind of thing happened years ago with the Three Stooges, a bunch of people with NO sense of humor got upset because they thought kids would imitate their slapstick gags and hurt one another.

Well, I never really thought about it before--perhaps it has something to do with it being slapstick comedy and maybe some people find it too violent for cartoons (which would be odd considering how much violence is in the media today.)
