Better go to Advance Auto Parts store and have your car scanned for problems, and then code(s) erased.
Disconnect the battery will also erase the code and make the check engine light off. But you don't get the code(s).
Most often the light on indicates something wrong in the engine/emission control system. If they did not pass your car's emission test, they should give you a test result indicating the code(s) or reason. If the light were on for no reason, I am afraid you might have a malfunctional ECM (engine computer).
Immediately after you have erased the code(s), you can not pass the emission test if it is 96 or later model. You need to drive it for some miles, say about 100 miles and then your car's emission control system will be READY for test.
If the malfunction is caused by an oxigen sensor, most often, after about 20 miles, and before your car is ready for retest, the check engine light will be on again; if it is catalyst converter efficiency below threshold, also quite a lot, you can drive a few hundred miles before the light comes back.
Hope can help a little more, Good Luck!

The year and model of car may help, on older models...it is simple as disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes to clear the codes making the light go off. On newer models they have to reset the cars computer...which isn't hard either.
I think you need a new mechanic...some sensor somewhere made that light turn on. Some major auto parts stores have free diagnostics...I'd check them out so you can go to a different garage well informed.
I don't think the place you went wants to devote the time to solve your problem.

I'm not sure where you are located but here in Kentucky you can go to Auto Zone and they will plug in their handheld diagnostic computer into your car and will be able to tell you what the problem is and they will reset it for you for free. This only takes a few minutes. If there is a problem they will surely help you to get the part. I had an issue a few weeks ago with my check engine light they checked it for me for free and all it was, was that the most recent time I fueled I didnt tighten the gas cap enough.

They can hook up a scanner to it and clear the codes. Try and go to Auto Zone. They scan your car for free and will let you know if there is a problem. If they can do that, they should be able to clear the code and make it go off. It could just be on for a pcv valve or something. Your car may be running fine but I would find out. Like I said, just go to Auto Zone, have them scan, and then ask them to clear all codes. If they won't do it you can take it to a mechanic but will probably cost you $25 or so.

Well first of all how can you be sure that there is nothing wrong with it? Many failures in the emission system can go undetected, such as a bad oxygen sensor. Go to your neasrest Auto zone, Advanced auto etc and ask them to check a code for you, they will do it for free. If there is no code, then try disconnecting your battery overnight to clear the code.

well the cheapest way to detect why your check engine light is on go to your local ADVANCED AUTO PART STORE. They will check it and tell you what is wrong with it. Alot of times they can be a dummy light. but if they clear it for you go directly to a shop to get your Inspection done. That way they dont know it was on to begin with. Because if you go to the dealer ship or shop while the check engine light is on they will clear it then have you drive it 50 miles b-4 they will pass it. But if it comes back on in that 50 miles then they will not pass until it is fixed.
But like I said the easiest way is go to ur local ADVANCED AUTO PARTS and have them check it tell you what is wrong and clear it.

yes the light can be turned off,but if there's any kind of a problem at all with it,the light will come back on again,if your sure there's noting wrong with it auto zone can turn the light off for free, but like i said if there's any kind of a problem with it,the light will come back on,it may stay off long enough for it to pass inspection though, good luck with it.

Unhook the battery for 3 minutes. It will reset the light in most cars.
