People here are pretty laid back, but just like everywhere else, they have their own opinions, likes and dislikes, lifestyles and interests. I think it is a really beautiful place to live mainly because there is still a lot of back country left and it hasn't become completely over developed like LA did, though the traffic has increased considerably over the 10 plus years I've lived here. There are areas where crime is a concern and in this economy, I expect we may see an increase in petty crimes. Most of the year the weather is tolerable, but a lot depends on the micro-climate you are in. It is always cooler by the beach and hotter inland. In the summer, inland temperatures can skyrocket over 110 degrees which is miserable for some, though it is dry heat. Depending on where you are in the county and traffic conditions, you can drive to LA in a few hours. Hard to say whether it is popular, many people find it expensive, our state taxes oppressive and with recent budget shortfalls, more people are leaving the state than coming in (according to the DMV).

Yep,

largely due to the Navy there,

There used to be a navy base in the phillipines, and filipino's can get u.s. citizenship by joining the navy...

so there are lots of filipino's in the navy, and their families here in the US largely because of that.
