Can a misanthrope ever be happy with or without the physical company of other people? I really find people as a whole disgusting, filthy/dirty, false/insecere, hypocritical, decietful, scheming, awkward and annoying - can I ever be happy without them even though I am genetically designed to want their company/presence?

The definition of a misanthrope is someone who prefers avoiding the company of others - regardless of 'genes' - therefore, it must be possible, no?

I dont think a misanthrope could ever truly be happy without the company of others, satisfied maybe--but not happy. I would just find a few friends you can really trust, and hang out with them when things get a little too stagnant.

You can, of course, be happy without the physical company of other people. Look at the people who chat on line, deriving comfort from the virtual presence of others possibly relative to their physical relationships. And a warm old cat that sleeps on your lap may be a very comforting alternative. Most or many people need physical relationships, but not all.

Forget about what genetics says for now and ask yourself, do you want to be around other people? Would you be happy that way, or would you prefer the company of others? Only you would know for yourself.

You see I have no bones to pick with graveyards I take the air there lightly, when take the air I must. I walk hands clasped behind my back culling the inscriptions.The leaning the flat and the upright. Of those I never weary. Yes keep ye to yere public parks and beauty spots, and leave me to my graveyards. The smell of corpses over that of grass and humus mingled I do not find unpleasant, a little heady perhaps a little sweet. But far more preferable to what the living emit. Their feet teeth armpits ar**holes sticky f***skins and frustrated ovules. In vain we wash. In vain perfume ourselves we stink.
I am looking forward to looking backward at that lot.
It'll be heaven for climate, but it's going to be hell for company.

well if you were a misanthrope you wouldn't need advice from Y!A. also, misanthropes, I think, aren't necessarily recluses -- they just mistrust most people, or the basic ideas of humanity or human behavior as reflected by society.

I think that a misanthrope ultimately is disgusted by themself, you need to be happy with yourself before you can answer your own question. All the best in the future it's up to you.

If you are a misanthrope, why would you care or bother what we have to say. If you truly feel that way about your fellow man?, get some specialist help. Life is hard sometimes and we all meet people who do let us down,hurt us and are false.
Now also, you WILL meet others who will never let you down,hurt you or ever be false. Your life will be a truly sad and lonely road, if you stick to this idea of the human race. Hope you find some true friends, some one you love dearly and have a happy life.
