Other than military and/or police, people don't need hand guns.

So, some of you are saying you are going to have a shootout. Others are saying someone is robbing you with a brick and you pull out your gun so he can take it from you and shot you dead. Very intelligent!

RURAL MISSOURI "HUH" If a person is really feeling down and decides to do away with themselves and their entire family, and there is no gun present....they have time to think more rationally.

I can appreciate why you may feel that way. Everyone is entitled to their opinion - it is America. I happen to disagree with you. Many more people are killed by cars than guns - does that mean we should outlaw automobiles? Most people feel that automobiles are a necessity and most feel that guns are a necessity for protection.

Unfortunately, as with plastic wrap, alcohol, automobiles, bathtubs and swimming pools - there will always be a small number of deaths associated with guns.

I feel pretty proud of America. We have a Constitutional right to bear arms - and millions of people own guns - yet we have a very small number of deaths due to gun ownership. That's pretty good!

PS Sorry about your son; however, he may have survived if he had a gun to protect himself.

There are many reasons a person would carry a hand gun, other than just the military or the police. Security guards, armored truck drivers, or the average citizen who has obtained a license legally, to protect themselves or others due to a high risk job. Even the every day person could have one for protection from crime. As long as a person is trained and knows how to use the gun, it is also a good idea to teach your children respect for any weapon.

I feel for your loss, however guns do not kill people. People kill people, and if it were not a gun it would be something else.

That is what needs fixing in society, not legislation against guns.

In the UK where firearms legislation has become more and more punitive over the years, gun crime has actually got much much worse, to the extent where amongst our less educated teenage gangs it is becoming a badge of honour to carry one.

All that legislation has done is to stop responsible recreational shooters from following their hobbies, interests and sports, whilst doing absolutely nothing to the illegal gun trade.

That is your issue. If you want to stop young men shooting each other, it has to be done through education, not legislation, because someone who is prepared to take a life cheaply will find the means somehow, regardless of the law and how much you demonise law abiding gun owners.

Come try to take my gun.
That is how many Americans feel, (me included). We have the right to bear arms in this country and that will NEVER change. With the security being so lax in this country, crime being so high, illegal immigrants influxing into the country unchecked, the economy starting to dip, and terrorists in this world trying to kill Americans, just for 'being Americans' .... NO WAY will anyone ever take my right to defend my family away from me.
I am not a violent person, but will defend what is mine with deadly force.
Here in rural Missouri, I would actually feel kinda sorry for anyone who tried to attack us. Nearly every home here has a gun, or has a relative who does. My brother is a gunsmith and demanded that as a single mom living alone, that I learn to use, clean, and be safe with a gun.
I now own a .38 hand gun, and would not hesitate to use it, quite accurately, ( i am a pretty good shot), if myself or my family were threatened.
Think of this.......... what if on 9-11, they had succeeded in destroying our Financial, Miliatary, and Executive centers?
They were aiming for the White House ya know.
It is not far fetched to think that these terrorist attacks are not over. They are making new plans everyday.
When that attack happened.... people around here were standing at attention.... with our guns.
All those who whine about guns will be thankful when we, the gun owners, stand up and defend our country if that time ever comes.
Be thankful, and be honest. Isn't there apart of you that is really happy that we, the responcible gun owners, are out here?
God Bless all those who serve in the military to defend us with a gun,
God Bless the police officers and reserve forces on American soil who defend us with a gun,
God Bless the NRA, (National Rifle Association), and all those who support it.
God Bless those who educate us on proper, safe, handling of guns.
And ... God bless anyone who stands up for their rights to be maintained in this country. We are losing for too many of our freedoms.
Be an American and stand up for yourself and your neighbor against those who try to take away our RIGHTS!

WOW!!! Ok, guns are necessary outside of the military and civil defense systems. Robbers, Rabid Animals, and so on. Guns are not coward weapons, they are the primary means of defense in most countries. If that were the case, a person who was being robbed and pulled out a 12 gauge so that he could defend himself would be a coward, makes no sense. See what I mean?

Jeez, can anyone figure out how to put together a sentence, and liberals say gun owners are the stupid people...
No, guns should not be taken away, guns ownership is a constitutionally protected right. Have you heard of the 2nd amendment? Why do all liberals want to take people's guns away? Law abiding citizens should have the right to own guns because no matter how much gun control laws Liberals pass, criminals will always be able to get guns.

We need Gun Control as much as Custer needed more Indians! Criminals don't pay any attention to laws... If guns were ever banned than only the bad guys would have them..Criminals prefer unarmed victims!! Having a gun will not help all the time but being defenseless will never help.. When seconds matter calling 911 and asking the bad guy to wait is not a viable option. Better to have a gun and not need it than to need it and not have it!!! **Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens.** @

Yes, I'm such a wuss. Next time someone points a gun at me I should threaten them with my knife. Move to Canada, there, people get stabbed instead of shot, does that make you feel better?

Hey Mr. Marine, why don't you try, reading the d**mned question. She clearly states other than military and or police.
Boy I love how some people get all self righteous after serving a tour. I know plenty of guys who've been shot at done some shooting and even been shot and they don't play that "defend freedom" card. Have some humility.

One reason that the US is so free, is that we have GUNS. Any country that would even dream of invading this country would face an armed population. Hitler did not have 100 million gun in the hand of private citizens. If the Jews had guns do you think that 6 million of them would have been put in the ovens. I have let me see, at least three guns. Break in my house, and you will meet Mr GUN.

PS. I will pull in first.

I agree with answer #1. The criminals will have them weather or not they are legal here. It will only be the good ones that follow the law that will need them. Look how often they assult others already. And if you take away guns from the people that really need them, you are giving them all the more reason to create anarchy, and there would be nothing else we can do to protect ourselves.
