If you have been AWOL from the service for several years, you are no longer AWOL, you are a deserter. You have a federal arrest warrant that is active, and if you come to the attention of federal authorities (INS, FBI, military, etc) you will be arrested and transported to a military brig.

From there, you will be charged with desertion, and will probably stand court martial.

As it is wartime (if you believe the current administration) you can technically be charged with desertion duriung wartime, a felony crime that carries a death penalty. However, realistically, you'll probably get a year in the brig, reduction to private, and a dishonorable discharge.

This is pretty harsh, but it's also pretty real.
