Doing homework with my third grader and got stumpped on a question. Looking for a 5 letter word that has the same a sound as found in whale. The 1st,3rd,4th,5th letters are all "small" letters. the second is a "tall" letter. The clue is "It flys in the sky." The answer can't be plane. Lower case "p" would be a "low" letter.
Tall letters like "t,l,k,f"
Small letters like "o,m,r,"
and no "low" letters like "j,p,q"
So.... small letter, tall letter, small letter, small letter, small letter

like xtxxx.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Plane doesn't work due to the "p"would be a "low letter". However that is where I was heading as well.

(Hold all that -- I forgot the "a" sound! This does NOT look promising!)

MUST be a mistake -- using the methods below, then reducing it to words with a long A, all you get is:

chain, chair, chaos, chase, shame, share, shave, claim, slave stain, stair, stave

And "alien"!?

---------------------------

(Ignoring the "a" sound requirement)

Not the best, but the ONLY one that makes sense is:

storm

If they've just been doing the story of David & Goliath (public school? probably not), it might be "stone" !

Of course, I don't know your kid's teacher... it could be "alien"!

Or --- clown, china, rhino

This a real head-scratcher. Plane, or rather plane, fits the requirements exactly - just look at it. The "whale" part is the problem. I wondered if whale was actually "wail." But even then I could only relate to "com-plain," which was a stretch for me let alone a poor little third-grader. That must be some school your child is going to!

Edit - Sorry. I overlooked the "small" letter criterion. (Don't remember that kind of subdivision from days long, long gone.) But I had another idea. FLEW-ke! Hahahahaha. No! You white-coats stay away from me! You want the guy next door!

wh... it would have to start with these letters if it sounds like whale and follows the pattern of xtxxx. Good Luck -- because I tried and have no clue, I even asked my third grader. When I used a crossword help site the only to "wh" to show up were whine and where.

"Plane" sounds right to me too. Sure hope his teacher didn't write "flys" meaning "flies" ;-)

You might consider writing your child a note so that the teacher will know that you guys tried your best. Good luck!
