I'm wondering what the characteristics of a Gemini are when it comes to things like drugs and alcohol. Are we more likely to use them or avoid them, etc.? Also what are the chances of a Gemini being mentally unstable?

Being a Gemini just means you were born in May or June. It has no bearing on who you are as a person. Do you believe in psychics and fortune cookies as well?

I work in the school district in my town. We have a program called the D.A.R.E. program. Drug Alliance Resistance Education. A former police officer runs this program in all the elementary schools in my city. A permission slip goes home to all the parents of fifth graders and must be signed by the parent and brought back to the school in order to attend this class. It is an awesome program discussing drugs ,alcohol, cigarettes and peer pressure. We see movies, we also do some role playing. The children are shone how people react when they are on drugs and what they do to your mind and health. The kids are really well informed. When they get done with the class they have a booklet that they have filled out during the course of the class. They get to keep this. Also, at the end of the course ( I'm thinking the class lasts about 6 weeks) there is a graduation ceremony that takes place for the kids and the families are all invited to come and pizza and refreshments are served for those who want them. The class is 1 hour a week during school hours. By the time these kids leave the program they are very much able to discuss all the negatives that can happen around doing drugs and alcohol. I think the younger you talk to them the better. Kids know a lot more than you think.

Geminis will try ANYTHING once so it's no surprise if they've tried drugs, alcohol etc etc...the fact is, Geminis are ruled by the planet Mercury and hence, born with an innate curiosity about anything and everything! They are also extremely restless, flighty and born with a low boredom threshold. Routine and the mundance lifestyle doesn't appeal much to them so they are more willing to experiment with new stuff. This is not to say that they will get addicted to them (unless they have a strong Piscean influence in their charts). Many are smart enough to try once and not go near the stuff again. For them, the experience was all that matters.
As for being mentally unstable, they may be so much of a scatterbrain and taking on so many projects (many more than they can handle) that they may appear schizoprenic. This is naturally due to the Gemini being a mutable, flexible sign as symbolised by The Twins and thus, many have at least 2 different faces/masks. For some Geminis, this can be too much to take and lead them to depression or develop mental instability or confusion (Gemini is predominantly a thinker sign).

If you're looking for signs of possible substance abuse in a person's birth chart, you want to look at adverse aspects to their natal neptune.
Neptune rules drugs and alcohol, and as such, I'd say that a pisces probably has a better chance of becoming addicted than a gemini does in general, however that of course does not exclude gemini from having these problems. Just saying that they wouldn't neccessarily be the obvious choice in this instance.

Aspects between Neptune, the moon, the sun and the 12th house are going to be the most important influences, not the sun sign. Drug and substance abuse is not the characteristic of any one astrological sign. Mental instability is not something that is peculiar to one sign or another. The aspects between planets and houses will tell you more than anything will. On the other hand, certain "traits" might not manifest and materialize and dramatize for years and years. You can be together and everything go along just fine, then, because of stress, unexpected trouble, whatever....a trigger is pushed and BAMB! you've got a substance abuser on your hand ......... or you become one yourself.

Their more likely to use drugs, because of their unpredictable, social, curious nature. They stay on the go, and involved in social events. They need a stable force in life to keep them grounded.
