80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Suppose you are in the Army and you have this idea that you're going on a mission. You wait for orders but you don't get any. Would you then assume that your orders must be to go out to the local bar and have a good time? Wouldn't the logical move to be to go find your commanding officer?
If we're on a mission, then our commanding officer is God. The logically implied mission is first seek God.

The simple answer is...Life is what you make of it.
However if you are looking for a more inspirational answer, then it has to be joy. We are born here to discover the joys of life. Happiness is often fleeting, temporary feeling that can be lost as we journey through life while Joy is much deeper and heartfelt. We all know that life offers us many pains, disappointments and suffer, thus if you are able to find joy in this life, then you have found the meaning of life.

my smart alack response was 42 but someone already said it. LOL
In my philosophy class we discussed "Free Will" We are taught what is right and wrong and then left to make our own choices.
For those who believe in souls (I do) I look at life as the process of sorting all the good and bad for the Final Reckoning. All of the choices you make, make a mark as to good or evil on your soul... no matter what your religion. You can either have it all sorted out within you the first time through or you have the opportunity to start over and do it again.(reincarnation folks) All of our souls are Chaos being sorted in to Good and Evil. We can enjoy it or we can suffer.. we make the choices.

Can we speak of a rainbow without colors? So too, we cannot speak of life without meaning. For meaning is intrinsic to life, and every part of life is meaningful.
Nothing about life is ever wasted. Everything you do counts. Every word you speak has its affect. Every thought that passes through your mind, lives forever. Your soul is the sum total of everything you do, every word you speak, and every thought that enters your mind.
So be careful how you nurture your soul. Seek truth throughout your life. Practice being loving always. And relish everything in this world that has beauty. That is all you need to know in life. That is all there is to know in life.

"Climb the Highest Mountain, "Mark Prophet, and "Man, Master of His Destiny," O. M. Aivanhov, speak to this question.
Basically, we're here to learn to be more as Christ Jesus and the Saints, to ascend in the Light of God as have Enoch, Elijah, Jesus, and others.
Http://www.coasttocoastam.com radio has guests who comment to this as well.
"Expecting Adam," Martha Beck, and "Extraordinary Knowing," Dr. Elizabeth Mayer, also are good, as is "When Invisible Children Sing," Dr. Huang.

there is no god
there is no "meaning" of life. life is here to recycle the free energy at the surface of the earth. Eventually all life here will be wiped out when the earth is swallowed by the sun and the universe doesn't care.

Meaning implies a purpose and a purpose implies importance. Humans are just as important as any other type of life in any other galaxy: not at all.

Ask a mouse the meaning of life.
Eat. Drink. Don't get eaten by hawks, cats, or snakes.
Yep. That seems about right.
