My goldfish does not move around that much during the day, but at night he is swimming all over the place? Is my fish nocturnal? If so, can I reverse it?

He's acting like a nocturnal fish, but goldfish are diurnal (active during the day). The question here is why is yours behaving differently than it should.

What's the water temperature of the tank? It may be that the water is too warm for him during the day (they should have water under 70oF; warmer water holds less oxygen than cool). So during the day he may be lethargic from the reduced oxygen level, but perks up at night when the lights over the tank (if they produce any heat) are off.

Are there any other fish in the tank? Many people keep goldfish with plecos (not a good idea since the fish need different temperatures, are both big waste producers, and both will grow quite large) and the plecos are active mostly at night, so the pleco (if you have one) might be disturbing your fish.

Since you know the set-up and the room conditions better than we do, consider what all might be different between the daytime and nighttime in his tank. Any equipment (other than lighting) that's on/off at night, especially if it might affect oxygen level or areation/water movement?

Where do you live? Do you keep the tank lights on during the day? If it is too hot, there may be oxygen depletion so the goldfish will not move too much during the day. At night, the water temperature drops and it is cooler for your goldfish to be more active.

no he is just more active at night and you can try to reverse it by makeing the room dark during the day and light at night!

your fish may not be nocturnal he/she may be just "chill" during the day and if you turn all your lights of at night he/she may 'freak" because he/she might be afraid of the dark !

ha ha no you cant reverse it!
it could be that your fish prefers to sleep at night.. but do fish really sleep?
maybe your fish responds to the dark.. do you feed it at night? this could be why too.

Does it have any cover or hiding spots? He may be feeling a little exposed.
