I hate to admit this, but my favorite band is Pink Floyd too, and I discovered them on the radio. The DJ said, "I don't have to tell you what this is..." as the opening loop of Money started playing. I remember thinking, "Yes you do have to tell me!" Because I wanted to know the name of the song and the band, but within seconds I was gaping at the radio, unable to believe what I was hearing. By the end of the guitar solo I was this band's biggest fan, and I didn't even know who they were. Then, when the DJ announced at the end that it was Pink Floyd, I remembered this hippy dude I knew who had some of their records, so I got on my bike (no basket, no bell that rings) and raced over to his house (that might have had a mouse...) and I guess that I've spent more of my life since then listening to Pink Floyd than anything else I've done. What I'm ashamed to say is that Money was the door by which I entered their room of musical tune, not that the Floyd are my favorite band. Because they've made the most fascinating and enjoyable music I know of and, going back in time from The Final Cut, I don't know of any other group whose music has been so consistently and comprehensively great. There are Beatles songs, Zeppelin songs, Who, Yes and Hendrix songs that I don't like, but from The Piper to the Final Cut, Pink Floyd recorded no sound I know of that isn't a pleasure to experience, and that goes for all of Syd's solo stuff as well. Shine on!! Great question, thanks for asking.

I have a lot of favorite bands, and I discovered all of them differently. My first three favorite bands, that I ever listened to, I got from my dad. Since I was born, my dad was always playing Metallica, Rob Zombie/White Zombie, and Green Day all the time. From the age of five, I was always able to sing every word to all the songs(which is not good, considering the lyrical content of said bands songs). All my other favorite bands I've mostly uncovered on the internet, just by searching around and listening to obscure, unsigned bands. Which most of the time end up becoming popular later.

Well, I don't have a specific favorite band so I'll mention The Pixies. I first saw the cassette for Surfer Rosa in a record shop in London back in 1989 and was interested, although I had never listened to them before (that cover for a 17 year old kid did the trick). Buying it right there, I rode the bus and tube all over the city and it never left my Walkman - I was amazed by the new sounds coming through the speakers. Although I don't listen to it as often as I do now and was into The Smiths & The Cure, amongst others, I still consider it my "gateway" album to the alternative scene.

Mmmm...I feel a bit embarassed to say it, but the first band I got into was Queen. I was born in 1974, and when I was about 6 (seriously), I found a cassette that my parents had recorded from Capital radio in 1975 which was apparently "the best 100 singles ever"."Bohemian Rhapsody" was number one and I loved it (all that drama etc). I soon started buying their albums, and "Sheer Heart Attack" is still their best in my mind. As far as Pink Floyd go, I started smoking dope when I was 13 and a hippy neighbour played me "Interstellar Overdrive"...I was and still am blown away by it. The early post-Syd stuff was alright, but "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is still the best for me

Your favorite band is My second favorite band by the way.
Well one day when I was much Younger and I had just started to listen to classic rock radio (This was in 1983 btw) I hear this stunning amazing song on the radio.
It was glorious majestic powerful and absolutely mesmerizing.
I was thoroughly transfixed.
At the end of the song the DJ came on and said..
"And that was Led Zeppelin with Kashhmir"
I was totally hooked! And I have been a huge Zep fan ever since

I have many favorite bands, but I remember how I discovered and fell in love with Pink Floyd. I worked for RNW (Radio Netherlands Worldwide / Radio Nederland Wereldomroep ) in the late 1960's. I was one of many responsible for making stereo recordings to be used by many European radio stations for FM radio, which at the time was becoming very popular. I was doing a transfer of Pink Floyds 'Ummagumma' LP, and found it very interesting.
I brought a reel to reel copy of the album home with me that night. I was aware that they had 3 previous LP's prior to Ummagumma, two studio, and one studio soundtrack. But I had only heard bits of them at parties in the background as white noise. That night a buddy of mine brought over some window pane, and the two of us tripped out to the album. I was a Pink Floyd fan from that night on!
A couple months later 'Atom Heart Mother' was released, and upon hearing it, I was in disbelief that music so wonderful could exist. 'Atom Heart Mother' is still my favorite Pink Floyd album.

This is a bit embarassing... but my mom bought Neon Bible when it came out... I was shocked when I listened to it. She never bought CDs, except for Bruce Springsteen, and the only stuff her and my dad listened to were older stuff like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and CSNY, and some modern solo artists like Norah Jones, Allison what's-her-face, and Damien Rice.
But Neon Bible was incredibly different, it had a dark sound, dark lyrics, and was so interesting. I have to say, that's the album that sparked my interest in music. It's only about six months later and now I buy tons and tons of CDs and I am always listening to music nonstop. (For example, now I am listening to O Valencia! by the Decemberists.)
I know... it's weird.

I stumbled on Metallica, by seeing them in magazines, seeing kids around school with the t-shirts and stuff like that. You've got to rememeber that in 1986 they didn't have a video out, and radio wouldn't touch them with a 29 1/2 ft pole. So basically I bought a cassette copy of Master Of Puppets (which I still have BTW) blind and gave it a listen. The first couple chords of Battery and I was hooked.

I don't remember the year, but a cousin of my wife slid the 8-track tape into the player, The Godz quickly became my favorite. Gotta Keepa Running was the anthem we all lived by all those years ago. We lived it, we loved it.
We're godz, and godz are rock-n-roll junkies. I think someone has even put the song on YouTube. If never heard, check'em out.

A friend of mine introduced me to a few favorite bands. Others I discovered by reading review magazines.
With the advent of this new-fangled thing called the Internet, you can find new music and reviews and samples and suggestions at the speed of light.
