It's a mix. Santiago was arson. Malibu is said to have been caused by downed power lines. Witch is an exploded transformer.

The underlying problem is that our hills are so dry and the wind has been so strong that any little spark turns into an uncontrolled blaze.....

Good news is that (at least here in OC and at least for now), the wind has shifted (Planes are landing to the North at John Wayne Airport! Hurray!). This should increase our humidity and drive the fire back onto already burned ground.

The fire east of Irvine in Orange County has been confirmed as a case of arson. The Malibu fire started when the strong winds downed a live power line. I suspect that is the case as well with some of the others. None have been attributed to lightning strikes.

The original major fire in Julian is a wild fire, which means that it got hot, some patches of grass caught on fire, and it spread. The majority of the fires came from the fire in Julian. It's due to the Santa Ana winds carrying small sparks of fire everywhere. Only one fire was man made, and was put out quickly.
