Is there a practical use for it (apart from identification obviously) like what would they have been good for thousands of years ago? Why do we have them? How do they form? Thanks!!

There is no "why" to this question. That's just how it is. Fingerprints are formed pretty much randomly as part of fetal development. Random means there are billions of possible prints, thus unlikely that any two will be the same.
