Usually say "I'm great, how are you?"
But if you are under stress you can say "I'm hanging in there" and kind of shake your head a little and let out a little laugh that sounds like "hmmp". Then go on and see how they are.
It depends a lot on who you are talking to at the time and what the setting is and how many (and who)other people are within earshot. Normally, it is supposed to just be like saying "Hi".....you could just say "Hey" and keep walking like I usually do..................unless there is something I want to comment on with them.

Just say fine, thank you and go on.If it's a friend let the friend lead on with any more conversation and a stranger, then just sorta keep on going. If it's a stranger with a friend then be cautious and don't say any more than you have to.Good luck.

i dont really think anyone goes on to say how BAD they are doing. I know when Im feeling "blah" I just say "oh fine thank you" but I think if a person is feeling great they want to share that!

Even if I'm having a really bad day, I say I'm 'fine'.
Why bring someone else down with you? :]

I say fine if it's an acquaintance. But if it's my bff I go into details because she does the same thing.

Lol I hardly even go into how my actually day has been,I mean I don't think they want to hear all that, and I can't even say it all in such a short space of time so I normally say 'Fine Thanks' and smile or say 'Iam OK,How are you?'

I usually answer with the standard, "Fine, and you?" Most people who ask, don't really want to know. They are just being polite.

It's not a "real" question -- people say this in passing each other. Only the people close to you really care. BUT it is polite to ask....
