Consider some of the works of the early heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Judas Priest. You may want to even consider some late sixties psychedelic stuff and groups like the yard birds which produced Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

In short, try to look for the groups and musicians who influenced the people that influenced you.

Take these songs and put your metal to them, kinda like Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean. I think these punkish and lyrically engaging songs are strong and not used up - put a faster or heavier drum beat to them and feature your axe:

Joe Jackson - Sunday Papers
Elvis Costello - Peace Love and Understanding
Warren Zevon - Sentimental Hygiene
Don Dixon - A Million Angels Sigh
Eagles - King of Hollywood

And these less known songs can be used straight up:
Four Horsemen - Rockin' Is Mah Business
Taxxi - Forever (from Weird Science soundtrack)
Toto - Kingdom Of Desire (has to be heard to be believed, but Toto went metal here)
