My doctor's nurse called today to remind me to schedule the 6 week appointment for me (mommy) today. My baby's already 8 weeks old today, I feel fine, I've gotten my period again, and I don't see any concern. The delivery was a normal, induced, vaginal delivery with a few stitches.

So, how important is this appointment? What do they check? Do they take a blood test or anything?

My main concern is that I don't want to pay a couple hundred dollars for a lousy 5 min checkup. If it's really important, I'll go, but I've got enough medical bills from the delivery and I don't want to make more.

You should see your OB every year anyway. They do their normal yearly check up stuff, make sure you healed well, & discuss birth control options. I'm going to mine tomorrow, my baby's almost 7 weeks.

Skip it.

I (in the land of socialised medicine) went in a few weeks after giving birth to get something looked at. Certainly things hadn't finished healing, at all. And there was no need for another visit at six weeks.

This "six weeks" business -- wait 6 to have sex; go for a "checkup" -- is a one-size-fits-all lazy bit of doctoring. I suspect it is primarily for women too daft to be able to figure out there's a problem when their cervix is poking down into the toilet, or who need to be told that if they do not use birth control, the same thing might happen again.

I didnt go. Dont tell the medinazi's, but I survived just fine. I havent been to the doctors since delivery 9 months ago.

My mom had all three of us without going to a post partum.

Obviously if i had fever or weird discharge I would go. Actually, I had an infection, but I gave it a while, and since I didnt have fever and the green discharge stopped in a week, I didnt go.

Iam sure You'll just drop dead without a doctors permission to continue living.

I didn't go, I don't like drs. much to begin with. I knew it was important to go, yet I didn't. Instead I watched for what I knew would be strange, talked to my MIL who is a nurse and just let my body heal on its own. If anything funky would have came up I would have went in for sure.

it is pretty important that you go. they check a lot of things but mainly to make sure you are healing properly. i mean what if you aren't and you don't go and it affects the chances of having another child. it is up to you but it is something you should take very seriously.
