1976 silver penny?

A co-worker showed me a silver penny he has. It’s dated 1976 - is this real or just a novelty item?

In 1976 for the Bicentennial private companies made all sorts of so called collectibles out of our coinage, as well as making tokens and medals. The coin was probably silver plated, it is not a U.S. mint issue. So yes it is a novelty.
