I have a binary file that I have no idea what type it is ... no common extension is used and the file name itself is not very helpful either. Is there a practical way to determine an application that can open or run a file that is basically unknown to me?

You can use TrIDNet software, which is good for identifying the file type, and it is free, you can download it here:

Check that .NET framework is required!

I have had the problem also with compressed ACE files which are bigger than 4gb, in this case I used:

Go to folder options and check the option that say "always show file extension for known file types"
