Assuming you are using a PC...
If you use the Firefox browser you can install an add-on called "Broadband speed test and diagnostics", which gives a very good graphical indication of your speed. This is free.
If you want more detail, you can install Dan Elwell's "Broadband Speed Test" program. This costs $US18 to register, but can be used (I think for a limited time) without registration, and will probably tell you more than you need to know, but once again, in a simple, graphical format.

If I let the cursor hover over the internet connection icon on the system tray, I am given the speed of data transfer in mbps.

you can chek the speed with some internet pages depend on your type of conection (dsl, cable or t1) you can go to 2wire
