Here we are, how many years after the fact, with Katrina still with its mess in the aftermath in LA and no hope in rebuilding - In CA, with the wildfires, everyone in the US is dialed in and it has become a National disaster before it is even over. What, CA residents homes and lives have a higher value than Katrina victims? I'm confused as to why everyone is so "johnny on the spot" when it comes to CA wildfires but "sleep at the wheel" when it comes to Katrina?

The big difference is in the competence of the local authorities.

Another huge difference is that - unlike New Orleans after Katrina - the transportation infrastructure to the affected areas is still usable.

Besides - in California we did not have 100,000 people who did not bother to evacuate when told to.

First of , crabby blindguy at the top is a goof. The inept governor turned away the help offered by the feds and obviously that was stupid.Seems so many want to blame Bush for what happened in New Orleans. If you want to put blame somewhere, try your own back yard. People did not leave when they were told to. Who's fault is that? California got better response because the governor was on it right away. He did not wait a week after the fact to call for help. Don't lay this on the feds.

It's merely a question of competence in local and state government. Governor Schwarzenager was on the scene rather quickly after the fires began to spread, giving encouragement to local fire fighters and others involved in saving lives and property. Governor Blanco got to New Orleans from Baton Rouge about ten days after Katrina went through that city.
Mayor Snyder of San Diego got them to not only open Qualcomm Stadium for use as an evacuation center, but had the facility stocked with food, water and other essentials. Mayor Nagin of New Orleans gave us the indelible image of thousands gathered outside a locked Superdome without any resources to survive.
California's governor submitted the needed request for help from the Federal government on Sunday. Governor Blanco of Louisiana didn't send in the needed declaration for Federal assistance until nearly a week after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.
Mayor Snyder and his North County counterparts have been using assets of both the San Diego Transit System and North County Transit to move people without autos to evacuation centers from stricken areas. Mayor Nagin only used two of the NORTA busses, out of a fleet of over 400, to evacuate people from New Orleans. And they were family members of the New Orleans government and police department.
Simple competence.

Louisianna was run by a Democrat Governor, New Orleans has a Democrat Mayor. California has a Republican Governor. I would expect a better response by in a Republican led state.

OK, if it's not it, maybe it's that the houses that are burning are owned by rich Hollywood Liberals?

The difference is simple: Katrina victims were black. that's all Bush and his good buddy Mike Brown needed to know. They are helping their white suporters--they left the black people to die.
