It's personal preference. Personally I prefer front row center mezz, but some people really love orchestra. Like the answrer before me, he gave you a great example of a show that is best viewed from the balcony because of it's set design. If you do sit in the balcony, bring your opera glasses or bionoculars for periodic close-ups :-) You can rent them, but your own are always better.

It depends on where in the balcony and what theatre. I've known some balcony seat to be better than some orchestra seats... but granted the orchestra seat were WAY in the back under the balcony.

i've seen a few broadway shows on balcony that were better than farther back orchestra seats.

For some shows it's actually btter than the orchestra. "Wicked" is a good example. The elaborate set is better viewed from an elevation.
