Because the major fault runs through California. The San Andreas Fault separates the Pacific plate from the North American plate. There are many other faults running off and parallel to the San Andreas and this cause constant earth movement.
The San Andreas is responsible for tearing Baja California away from the mainland and also creating the Central Valley which will one day be an inland sea. The fault continues to San Francisco/Oakland where it disappears into the ocean but continues north to Alaska.

Earthquakes happen near fault lines, which are like cracks in the crust of the earth. There is a major fault, the San Andreas, that runs through California. It's not the only one in North America, but it has been the most active recently.
