The usual start time given is 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. This led to the Western Allies declaring war on Germany. The war finally ended in 1945 with the surrender of Germany, then Japan.

Japan had been fighting in China since 1937. The United States entered the war late, they finally joined the Allies after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. This was the turning point of the war. The entry of the US provided just enough weight to the Allied side to tip the scales.

So, official start to finish is 1939 to 1945.

What is called World War II is actually two distinct wars.

The European War began in early September 1939 with the German (and subsequent Soviet) invasions of Poland, producing declarations of war by the UK and France. It ended in May 1945 with an unconditional German surrender.

The Asian War could be said to have begun with the Japanese occupation of Manchuria (1931), but not in earnest until 1937. It ended with an unconditional Japanese surrender in September 1945.

The Soviet Union, an ally of Germany until invaded in June 1941, was not at war with Japan till August 1945, after the drop of atomic bombs.

The United States (and much of the Western Hemisphere), though clearly on the British side, was not in the European War till Hitler's declaration of war on 11 Dec .1941, following its declaration against Japan on 8 Dec.

This sounds complicated, but the facts are moreso.

World War II started primarily because the American people were unwilling to join the League of Nations at the end of World War I, thereby removing what would have been that organization's major military power. This led to, or allowed at least, Hitler's rise to power in Germany. There were several points at which he was thoroughly overextended and any kind of a show of force by the League or even just a few of its member nations would have put an end to his plans, but the other European powers continually caved in to him, appeasing him at almost every turn and allowing the territory, manpower and raw materials under his rule to continually increase. Then when the Friendship Pact between Germany and Russia was signed, his back was covered and he could attack, first Poland and then the countries to the west. American isolationism was the main cause.

Depends on the definition. Some say it began with Japan's first attack on China in 1931. Others say it wasn't a world war until Germany's attack on Poland in 1939. I have some books from the time that say it wasn't a world war until the US got in after the attack on Pearl Harbor in Dec 1941.

Germany and Japan were both defeated in 1945.
