The primary difference between PC and servers is that servers are built to have lots of IO capacity. Hosting a web site would be much better on a server. Most PC's can handle gaming, graphic intense applications and anything else a end user wants to do.

A PC (Personal Computer) is what a person uses. It could be a desktop device (sitting permanently on a desk) or it could be a laptop (carryable). The PC runs programs for you to use, typically Microsoft Office (Word etc.) e-mail, internet browser, calendar, calculator etc. Typically, you onoy turn a PC on when you want to use it.

A server is typically a much larger computer, offering capabilities to many 10's, 100's or 1000's of users. Typically a server is left on all the time, and so needs much better power supplies, disk drive capabilities, cooling fans and memory. The capabilities provided by a server are called "services" and are things like:
E-mail Server: Where your messages are sent to when you are not connected. The e-mail server can store your messages for you, and forward them onto you for when you want to read them.
Internet or Web Server: Holds pages of information that you can access using your Internet browser.
Database Server: Somewhere that can hold millions of items of data, for example the Driving License database or your bank details.

Servers at home are becoming much more common (especailly with the latest release from Microsoft of Home Server). These are used to store your photographs, documents, videos, TV recordings etc. You can then access these items from any desktop or laptop or media centre PC or XBox 360 in your house. One place to store (server) and many places to utilise (PCs).

A server is designed for a specific purpose in mind and only that purpose, this varies from printing servers, web hosting servers, login servers etc. Allowing multiple clients to send and receive data to it depending on its function.

PC's however are not designed in this way they are designed for the personal user as a means to perform many smaller tasks.

No! A server isn't a computer as such, its a memory system that stores webpages! When you access the internet and search for a webpage, you computer contacts all the servers and 'asks' them if they have what you need! If a server does, then it sends it to you! The internet is made of millions of servers all over the planet! You use a PC to access the network
