The OB/GYN (and a primary care physician can do this if they are comfortable with it) will do an exam of your breasts and pelvic area and do a special test called a pap smear to screen for cervical cancer.

They will have you check in at the front desk and then the Medical Assistant will call you back (just like at your regular doctor's office) so that the can get your weight and blood pressure.

After that they will take you to a room to have you undress and get in to a gown for the top (this is because the doctor has to examine your breasts) and then put a drape over the bottom half.

When the doctor comes in the room they will ask you how you are doing and other questions like about your period to see how things are going with that.

Then after a few minutes they will have you put your feet in to a set of stirrups and then put a special instrument in to your vagina called a speculum which looks like the bill of a duck. With a light they look at your vagina and cervix and also take samples of your vaginal discharge if they think an infection might be going on. After that the doctor will then take a special brush to take out some of the cells from your cervix to have it sent off to a lab for analysis. They check to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary.

After that is done the doctor will then take one of their hands to feel the ovaries and uterus to check for anything out of the ordinary such as masses which can be cysts as well as check for shape and size to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary there. After that with the one hand inside they will take their free hand and put that on your abdomen and press down. They are checking to make sure there is nothing out of the ordinary there such as with making sure there is no pain.

The whole exam takes about 10 minutes to do.

If the doctor is really good they will explain everything as they do it. If your regular doctor is not comfortable with doing this for you you can then make an appt to talk to the OB/GYN in plain clothes first before anything is done so that you can feel comfortable. I would recommend a female physician for this, especially for first timers when one goes for this kind of exam because it's easier to discuss issues related to health problems in that area (if they occur) with a female physician than a male physician.

If you have other questions for me please feel free to e-mail or IM me off site any time.

I know this sounds typical but it's really not bad. I put it off for 7 years because I was scared. I went last week for the first time and it was nothing compared to how I thought it would be. Please don't wait. This will help your body! I had a breast exam. Doc gently pressed around on my breast. Pap Smear, doc put a plastic thing inside me to open me up a bit and used a long Q tip to take a sample of my cells. Then she stuck a finger inside and briefly felt around. That was it! It was over in less than 10 minutes. It's REALLY not bad! Let them know it's your first time and they will be really informative.
