They could if they wanted to. It's way out of hand, especially the number of people bringing TB and Aids into the country, not to mention the number of criminals.. Controlled immigration is one thing, what we are seeing is quite something else.

the government can close the doors and should close the doors.

all these people who have answered stating 'this country has always had immigrants ' and 'theses people have a moral right to be here because our ancestors pillaged other countries' and ' we would lose all our doctors'have totally missed the point.

the issue is the uk is now over populated for the resources .

we do not have enough - jobs
hospital beds
school places
and homes - for any more people.

it is irrelevant what our ancestors did or didn't do . that was then - this is now.

only an idiot would suggest we send every immigrant who arrived in the country in the last 30 years or even 3 years back to their country of origin.
those who are here illigally should be sent home straight away and no more immigrants should be allowed to enter for a period of at least 5years regardless.
at least give those who are here and getting on their feet a chance to do so.
where assylum seekers are concerned-
if the circumstances of these people was so bad how did they manage to get on a plane - most have crossed several countries to get to the uk when they could and should have stopped at the first safe border if it was just purely for their safety.
the people in this country - whatever their nationality by birth - are being taken to the cleaners over this - the government has the capability to rectify this situation TODAY but for reasons that escape us all ,choose not to.
i suspect it is that this government and several before it (including the Tories)has no concern for the welfare of it's citizens and lacks the moral fibre to take the stand.

for some time i have been considering joining the bnp but on receipt of their 'info pack' and talking to a few of their members i have decided they are just too bigotted and ' white' for my liking.

i have now decided to join UKIP and would suggest that anyone who wants to stem the unrealistic and damaging flow of immigration should make a few enquiries along those lines.

Gillsman, I could not have said it better myself!!! Clearly those that want to shut the country down to immigration has absolutely no idea how the world works. Nor do they know their own history. Britain has always had immigration from the moment it became Britain, indeed all those who complain about immigrants ought to do their own family tree. Bet there are fair number of those that are not 'real' English. In fact, can anyone define English??? Since English are of Norman descent. So perhaps all those out there that read newspapers with half naked women in them, should go to their libraries and learn for real. By the way, most immigrants leave their homes because they HAVE to. Look at history books and see what country pillaged their countries in the first place...wow that's right BRITAIN. So think about it, Britain is wealthy because it raped, pillaged and stole from just about most countries...perhaps those coming from ex colonies have an inherent right morally!!

If all the immigrants left the NHS would lose 48% of its doctors, so clearly there is also a problem that Brits don't want to commit to years and years of education.

We need immigration, and we must now differentiate where immigrants are coming from. Free migration within the EU must be allowed. This is to the advantage of the countless Britons who live and work in other EU countries.

What most people who are concerned about this really usually concentrate on is asylum. There are ways of preventing people from claiming asylum (which is an ancient legal right). Identify the areas where they come from and go and put that country on the right path with military action. If people are coming telling stories of horrific deeds in their homeland it is for good reason. It's true.

It should be easier than for most countries since we are an island.
I worry about reports in the press that says the morons in Brussels want to send another 20 million Africans and Asians here. What on earth is supposed to be wrong with a sovereign country making its' own decisions about this??
With a population of 60 million we are already over crowded - and we definitely don't need Africans or Asians any more.

Well the British government has nothing to do with immigration, so they really don't care! Besides if they wanted to stop people from coming to the U.S. then they can probably change their way of government! Maybe their people won't leave them! =]

Immigration is fully controlled by the Govt. There cannot be any illegal immigration.Persons coming to UK without valid
documents can be deported from Air port or sea port by immigration officials.Unless there is corruption at immigration officer level, illegal immigration is impossible. It is the duty of the Govt to take action against corrupt officials.

yes most emphatically They could start as I have said in others similar questions by bringing the UK back to a complete island close the tunnel more strictly control the passage of vehicular traffic and I mean strictly. 24/7 stop all, immigration admit only people who can prove the ability to support themselves immediately and their families, and who can prove they can benefit our society from the word go, do not allow benefits of any kind for at least twelve months and only then if, the person/s have proved the requirements

What can and should they do??

Britain took over so many places, back in time.
India, West Indies, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Palestine, Singapore, parts of Africa, and the list goes on.

Britain wanted the things from those countries, for wealth. They missed out on America, when the red coats fought for it.

Now the end result is that you have all those people coming to live in Britain.
Cannot have it both ways.

Too late to change, now. You have a multi-cultural society, just like everywhere in the civilised world, with good and bad results.

Hahaha, it's you again. "Mr Daily Mail reader".

Did you know that immigrants actually boost the economy? What is wrong with "immigration"? Your question simply shows how ignorant you are about the whole issue.

Immigration is fine. Britain has a problem with illegal immigrants as does every country with open borders, such as America. At the end of the day, it's just how the world works, son. Some immigrants will come in and do the shi*tty jobs that no-one else wants. Some will come and work their behinds off to earn money. Some will come to rob, steal and scrounge, for sure - but no more than the indigenous people of this country already do.
