OK here is the deal - I am sewing a costume for my Daughter for Halloween
The material is a little thick - its kinda like a Polyester Blend - it feels like Fleece - its very soft but is thinner than fleece actually
I tried sewing on regular cotton material and I didn't have ANY problems - but when I sew on the Costume Material - my thread either breaks or the seams skips really bad and also the needle has gotten stuck in the material - I know for sure it must be the material - cause the machine is threaded right - but I have tried everything- I have changed my needles 5 times using different sizes - even a Jeans Needle and nothing helps - I have even changed the settings on the machine with the tension and nothing helps
Any suggestions - What settings should the machine be set to and what needle do you suggest for medium thick fabric - (its not too thick)
Could it be the thread ?? I am just using regular cotton thread - should I be using something thicker ?
Thanks in advance

Thanks - I just called a shop and they want me to bring it in to be sure but they think I might need a ballpoint needle too

Does the material have any type of stretch in it - then you should be using a ballpoint needle - this should solve the skipped stitches. Also use a small zigzag stitch.

I agree with aussie sheila, try a ball point needle if the fabric is a knit. It makes all the difference in the world. I've made several housecoats using fleece fabric and you do have to clean the lint out frequently in and around the bobbin case. Your thread should be "good" thread, not the cheap three for a $! kind.

How frustrating! Could the presser foot be snagging on the soft material so that the feed dogs can't push it through evenly? You could try a flat foot with no prongs if you have one. Or some paper or interfacing under the foot, and even between the material and the feed dogs if it is also catching on the bottom. A ball-point might be the right needle, although I don't think that is causing your problem.

This certainly is frustrating, but may I suggest a Heavy duty needle and a tension looser, since the average tension is 5, perhaps a 4 may help....The thread you may choose to use for the cosutume, since it is thicker/med thickness..perhaps a heavier quilting thread may be necesary...I really hope this resolves your frustration, so you can sew with geater ease....:)

It could be the thread, some thread when it is old will give the effect you are having.
