I love that story---will have to reread it now.
If I recall correctly, it seems he has the opinion that nature is out to destroy you, so a person needs to be able to outwit it. He is proud of the fact that he knows he can travel a certain distance before he needs to build a fire to warm up and has made exact calculations to do that. It's when he miscalculates the location of a fire below some branches wet with snow that fall on and extinguish his fire, that he gets into trouble and has to make quick decisions to save his life.
