I want to chnage my name, and I was told that I didnt have to go to court to do so. And that I simply just did it through social security, by getting them to change my name legally.

Is this true.? and if so , how does all of this work? time it takes? any information you can give me on this Please.

It does depend on your state. At common law, anyone could use any name, as long as it was not for illegal purposes. That is still true in most common law states (LA is not, and many western states are "code" states).

But the Social Security Administration will not change a name without a court order allowing it.

Name changes do not usually take long and you may be able to do it yourself. The probate and family court is the usual place, but any court with equity jurisdiction can usually do it.

No, it's not true.

You can go to your courthouse and change your name legally for around $80.00. If you're an adult, you shouldn't have to go to a hearing. If you're a minor, you're parents will have to do it. It took about a month to change my son's name legally. Just go to your local law library and ask for the paperwork on a name change(in Oregon, it was $15.00). Follow the directions, submit it to court, and listen to what the clerk tells you to do.

Social Security requires PROOF of a name change.

I don't think that it is true. As far as I know Social Security will not accept a name change unless it is done legally before it reaches them.
