I have a 500gb external drive I want to split into 2 parts (a 120gb chunk for time machine, and the remaining for media). The problem is I don't want to format the drive and lose the data already on it. Is this possible?

The drive is formatted in FAT32 right now, I wanted the new partition to be HFS+.

120gb (HFS) 380gb (FAT32)

nope, you have to have some way of backing up the data first, as partition, by definition, requires the drive to be wiped, and reformatted.

why bother partitioning, you can just set Time Machine to backup to a folder, if i'm not mistaken? And even if not, you can buy 100gb external drives for less than $100 now, i think. Why not just buy one specifically for that purpose? I know I am.

Time Machine is included with Apple`s new OS, Leopard, which will be available to purchase tomorrow Oct. 26, 2007.

All the tools you will need to non-destructively re-partition your external hard drive should be included.

Ask before you buy to be sure.
