Ball gags work by filling your mouth with foamy stuff. They have a belt component to them, and some of them can be locked with small padlocks (like luggage locks).
Spreader bars generally have loops on the end. You can put on bondage cuffs and use ropes, chains, or padlocks to lock them. For self bondage you can probably use a timer based lock.
But with all self bondage you need to be careful.

Ball gag works similar to a belt as far as fastening. They come in lockable versions, but do not need to be locked to be used.
Spreader bars are dangerous solo. Imagine a broom handle with two eye hooks on either end. The restraints on your arms or legs clip into those hooks. It's very likely you will not be able to undo them once you've done them unless you do it to your feet only.

Sounds kinda risky, Spreader bars will definately limit your mobility, and you sometimes need to squirm to reach those falling keys. Ball gags should be fine, but wear one while not tied just to see how it feels.

ball gags have either buckling devices or loops, spreader bars tend to use clips or locks to attach to cuffs..spreader bars I wouldn't advise for self bondage sessions...

Dude, if you need to feel confined. at least respect yourself. Wrap yourself inside a heavy rug, or cover up with a gym mat.
