The fire east of Irvine in Orange County is arson. The Malibu Canyon fire was started by high winds knocking down a live power line. I suspect many of the others were also started by downed power lines. Some of the wind gusts from the santa ana winds were hurricane force.

Hi,
I live in the area. The air is thick with smoke and the sky is dull. This is one of THE WORST fires in history... actually I belive it is the worst.
Anyways, getting to your question no one knows for sure what started the fire although everyone has an idea.
Mine is that it is a wildfire. No human being is so heartless and cruel to set off such a dangerous and deadly fire. It has just been really hot here and it was just the nature of Earth. Plus, they are popping up everywhere. There are already thirteen!
But, most news channels think there wildfires too so that is probably it.

There are several separate fires in San Diego county. There has been no mention of any particular causes, I agree with NC in that probably they are wild fires. The winds from the east bring hot desert air westward. The air is very dry so any little spark, cigarette, etc can start a little fire. Little fires become big fires in the dry scrub country. The number of displaced people has reached 300,000. We are all affected in some way.

Some of them. Sanitago was arson. Magic fire was started accidentally by a couple of construction workers. Looks like the Slide Fire was started by sparks from electric lines.

Only one fire has been discovered to be arson, and its the one currently in Irvine... some ***holes started that fire in three different spots.
The Stevensons Ranch and Castaic fires were deemed accidents.
For all the rest, they are still investigating.
