Someone wins a $16M lottery, here in Canada it is handed to you ALL AT ONCE and then says "I'm not going to quit my minimum wage job and all I am planning on doing is buying a new mattress because I have back problems."
Or the people that win and DONT share with their families in need? I know one person who won $2M and his cousin, a single parent, doesnt use drugs, or drink, was living on the street with her two kids. He didnt give her one cent. He could have at least paid for a couple of months rent for her. Back then it would have been about $1000.00
I think God made a "little note" in his book over that one.

Robert did I say it angered me? No I said it ticks me off - but clearly my question angered you, ever thought of getting some therapy for that anger of yours?

Whatever the relationship with his cousin, and they are both my cousins, so I DO know that she is a good person, its the two kids that he should have thought of. THEY dont deserve to be on the street, no matter what.

I'm with you, Isotope! If I ever won a lottery, I'd consider it one hell of a gift from up above....and gifts are meant to be shared.

People who win big may not think of being a big spender but later, after winning the lottery, it all sinks in & they come up with all kinds of things to purchase. Many do keep their minimum wage job because they love their job/boss/co workers. They may change their minds later. As for the man who won big & wouldn't help his niece out, I consider that to be a real shame, especially where the children are concerned. What goes around comes around. I have been asked more than once, what I would do if I won the lottery. My answer is always the same, & that being, that I would take care of my sons, their wives, & my five grandchildren. I'm not a selfish person, & if I could see them pay off their homes & bills , it would make me so happy. My grandchildren would each have a nice nest egg waiting for them at a later date also. :) :) :) :) :)

Well, I have already charted out what I would do. First hire a financial advisor [an honest one] to show me how to make that money for all my loved ones...then provide for my kids and grands and what years my Mom has left. Then I would buy [cash] an adequate place to live yet with enough of the modern acoutrements to keep me happy. I'd pay off bills and set up a fund for my elder care....and whatever was left over I would help out friends who I know are in a bind. And yes, I would continue working because I also work for 'productivity' and my sanity! lol

I don't get angry just puzzled. Why would anyone in their right mind choose not to enjoy the benefits of wealth? You don't have to go nuts, just do the things you could never do before.
As for sharing. Of course you should. You couldn't spend that amount of money in a lifetime anyway unless you were a complete idiot. These people who say they are going to continue working have no imagination. They must lead such dull, uneventful lives that they don't know how to enjoy their new found riches. Why buy the lottery ticket in the first place?

I've heard people say they'd keep working here also (USA) when they won the lottery. I always think, why don't you start a biz and give other people jobs too or do volunteer work and let someone else have your job. I can't imagine winning and not taking care of your family. My husband always says if we won the lottery, I'd just give it away. lol It's the main reason I'd want to win, there is so much I could do for so many.

I used to feel that there should be a "secret lottery codicil"
which would rescind all winnings if the winner said he/she was gonna keep working!
The not sharing thing is very foreign to most of us. I don't get it. However, family circumstances vary widely---maybe the non-sharers sometimes have good reasons for not sharing.
The Lottery would be nicer if they gave 20 folks a million bucks each, instead of giving one guy 20 million---how much dough does anyone need??

If I won that much money, (hahahahaha) I would hire a financial advisor like Sage indicated and then, I would buy my own private island in the Pacific where it's warm. Only invite the people who had treated me kindly before I was rich....(maybe around 6 to 8 people) All of them would be offered a large sum Like 500 thousand to get their bills paid and I would never, never tell my daughter I won anything. She would hound me till I croaked!
I would just send her money every month. She wouldn't be invited to the island because she's one of the unkindly ones...I still wouldn't turn my back on her tho. I would donate to the Salvation Army because they helped me when I was 25 yrs old and homeless with a toddler and pregnant... They gave me food and a place to live till I got back on my feet. They never asked me for a dime to repay them. I know a guy who won 25,000 in the lottery. He spent it on himself. If I gave a large sum of money to a homeless person, I'd be afraid they would blow it all and come back for more. I'd probably pay for their education so they would have their own money. Oprah tells the story of a relative who came to her asking for money and she secretly went to her bank and paid off her mortgage. The woman got mad at her and she told Oprah it was because she wanted a NEW house! She didn't want the one she was living in at the time.. Some nerve huh?

it does bother me, but there are other lottery winners who use their money for good. Like one couple won 2M and used all of their money to start a cancer foundation in memory of their son. So, I think even if there are the people who don't deserve the money win, there are people who use it for charity and such. I guess you can find out how greedy how someone is when they win the lottery.

Well, it is their money to do what they wish. If I won that much money I wouldn't be inclined to give any to some of my in laws. They are the kind who expect loans at the drop of a hat and never make any attempt to repay the loans. They also expect to be able to live in our home if they get evicted, which happens a lot. They don't work much, but always have money for beer. If they were decent people who work hard trying to get their lives together, I would gladly help out.
