Well I lived in Hartford all my life. I always tell a tourist or to someone that just passes along( in Hartford) Check out like someone pointed out the Mark Twain House around Farmington Ave. Another place (in Hartford) is the Old State house right in Downtown Hartford. We have also opened not so long ago a Convention Center, very nice built if I might add. Simultaneously, you can check out the Riverfront of Hartford; very good view of the Conn River. A MUST SEE ATTRACTION in one of the oldest museums if not on the nation is the Wadsworth Athenium (museum). The Wadsworth has a variety of old aged portraits and I think they also have a display off 500 years of European art. Email me if you want me to email you a brochure or if you want more insight.

i live in connecticut and it's really not that exciting. if you're looking for entertainment, i recommend the mystic seaport in mystic, connecticut, or the foxwoods and mohegan sun casinos. for shopping, i suggest going to greenwich, connecticut.. to the village, which is full of designer clothing.
hope this helps!
