Notre Dame fired Ty Willingham after going 5-6 in his third year. Charlie is in his third year and is currently 1-7.

No, because it would be unreasonable to fire him this year. Everyone from the top, down to the bottom knew it was going to be a bad season.

Well, if Notre Dame does not want to be held as hypocritical, they should be firing Weis. Usually you give a coach til his third season to decide whether to fire him or not because half the roster should be his players and the players should be understanding his system. And with his players Weis isnt doing anything. He was doing better with the Willingham recruits. And contrary to another answer, Weis was not Notre Dames first pick, Urban Meyer was..but he turned them down. If Weis is such an offensive genius, then why can't he get anything going? The last few years Notre Dame has had some of the top recruiting classes. Dont give me the...he lost his top quarterback, running back from last year thing either. Michigan started Henne and Hart 3 years ago and went to the Rose Bowl. He has been severely out coached this season. Did that one guy call Michigan State an offensive powerhouse? The team that put up 3 offensive points against OSU and 17 against a bad Pitt team?

Anyway, if Notre Dame were to be consistent in their practices they would be firing Weis at season's end. But since when is Notre Dame consistent now?

Nope. Weis will have at least a couple years before the axe falls. Charlie has two top-ten recruiting classes still learning the college game. Charlie Weis has another top-ten recruiting class coming in next year, including Jimmy Clausen's blue-chip replacement, Dayne Crist. Everyone knew that this year and possibly next year were going to be difficult years. Now, consider that ND took on the strong defense of GT and Penn State, the pre-season top 5 Michigan, the always offensive powerhouse of Michigan State and Purdue, UCLA pushing for national championship consideration, the current BCS #2 Boston College, and the perennial favorite USC in their first 8 games. Most teams would have some difficulty with a schedule like this. How many rookie teams would survive that schedule? Not many. Notre Dame is lucky to be 1-7.

Another thing, Notre Dame's offense has absolutely zero upper-class experience available for the underclassmen to learn the positions from, except maybe John Carlson at TE. Weis's recruits are in their freshman and sophomore years in the program. Therefore, the upperclassmen needed to teach the skill positions to were Willingham's recruits.

IMHO, Weis' only mistake is that he did not give sufficient playing time to 2nd string players at the skill positions to gain experience. But that would have been difficult to do in tight games against skilled opposition. If ND played in a conference, then there might have been an opportunity to do so, but because ND plays an independent schedule, they'd face stiff opponents every week.

Nope. He can recruit Notre Dame has the top recruiting class this year, so help is on the way. He shouldn't get fired because they don't have the talent to do any better. It is not Weis's fault that they are only 1-7, Plus, Notre Dame always have a pretty tough schedule. Georgia Tech, Penn. St., Michigan St., Michigan, USC it is not easy on a team after they lose their entire offense basically. They lossed their QB, RB, and the top 2 WR. I doubt any one else could do any better.

No.
Charlie is an alumnus of Notre Dame, Ty wasn't. Charlie was their first pick, Ty was only hired after finding out that their first choice lied on his resume. Charlie took his first 2 teams to BCS bowl games. Ty didn't. Charlie has had consecutive recruiting classes in the top 10. Ty had consecutive recruiting classes in the 40's.

As a Notre Dame fan, I knew this was going to be a bad season. I didn't realize it would be this embarrassing. I give Charlie next year to make a VERY BIG improvement. If it doesn't happen, then I'll jump right on that bandwagon with all the Irish haters and admit they need to start looking elsewhere.

Forget all the Ty Willingham answers and whether or not its based on racism, recruiting or whatever. It comes down to money. They just extended him last year to a 10, thats right 10 year contract. They will not get rid of him, it would cost them a fortune. Every sports guru knew that it would be a bad year, after Bob Davies recruits ran out, and before Charlie's recruits got enough experience. Ty just wasn't a great recruiter. Doesn't mean he was a bad coach. Lots of coaches struggle with recruiting. Especially since Ty was not an alumni. ND fans will just have to be patient and ride this out.

Nope.
1) Performance: Weis took them to a BCS championship game each of his first two years there. Which is quite remarkable considering the higher academic requirements.
2) Plenty of options: the NFL would love if Weis got forced out of ND. Professional teams have been pursing him for years.
3) Long term contract: it would cost Notre Dame a bundle to negate his deal.
4) Options: Which proven coach, is unemployeed, and banging on the athetic directors door for a job?

Weis is way over his head. The Irish are still living on what happened 20 years ago. The program is a sham and everyone knows it. I expect Notre Dame to begin scheduling more Dukes, and more Navy's to compete

No. He is signed to a big extended contract. Stop trying to make it a racist issue. Remember, N.D. didn't have to hire Willingham in the first place. It was Willingham's inability to recruit that got him fired and why there are no good players at N.D. Remember, Willingham won with Bob Davie's players. Weis will have another year or two to produce.

No...not even if he wins fewer. After the loses started piling up it garners more press (not good, but press none the less)
this will equate to: a fantastic recruiting class, more alumni money, more magazine articles, harder work from players, shake up of coaching except head coach, relaxation of admissions requirements, and probably a historic turn around..
and being ND it wouldn't surprise me if they went to a bowl game with 3 wins

Unreasonable?
He is responsible for the talent they scouted and gave scholarships to. The same talent that is stinking up every field they play on. This IS his fault.
I agree, give coaches a couple years, in most cases.
This isn't one. Get rid of Weis if you want to win!
