Yeah the Harry Potter series was awesome. my wife finally got me to start reading them and I blazed through them in a few weeks. You might wanna check out the giver series by lois lowry, or if your in the mood for something more serious read mere christianity also by C.S. Lewis.
What? you would not read the harry potter series, that makes you a Christian fundamentalist. I'm sorry but come on, there fictional books, sources of entertainment, you shouldn't take them as anything more than that. you are a christian and if your concerned that a innocent series of books that in no way is gonna change your mind about the god you believe in, is evil and projects satanic beliefs than you obviously don't have the faith you thought you had. I am a ordinary church going christian, I study the bible on a daily basis, but I will not accept
fundamentalist ideas which suggest that if I celabrate halloween or watch silly shows on tv with witches that I will go to hell. please do not get to upset it's just my personal opinion, and this is just a silly internet sight on which we can use to project our own opinion.

Some of these are from female perspectives, some may be a little "girly girl" for your liking but others should be okay. I've left both genre on and you can decide. Meryll of the Stone (Brian Caswell) Picnic at Hanging Rock (Joan Lindsay) Stranger with my face (Lois Duncan) Playing Beattie Bow (Ruth Parks) My Sister Sif (Ruth Parks) Hitch hikers guide to the Galaxy (Douglas Adams) Holes (Louis Sachar) Lord of the Rings / The Hobbit Eragorn trilogy Narnia The Golden Compass Interview with a Vampire (Anne Rice) Requiem for a Princess (Ruth M Arthur) Looking for Alibrandi (Melina Marchetta) Angels Gate (Gary Crew) Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants Pelican's Creek (Maureen Pople) The Diary of Anne Frank To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee) The Shiralee (Dárcy Niland) Into the Wild (John Krakauer) Chocolat (Joanne Harris) Harp in the South; Poor Man's Orange; Missus (Trilogy by Ruth Parks) Where the Heart is (Billie Letts) My Place (Sally Morgan) Little Women (Louisa May Alcott) Rebecca (Daphne De Maurier) The 3 Muskateers (Alexandre Dumas) Anything by the Bronte sisters or Jane Austen Whatever you do don’t run The December Boys (Robert Noonan)

I think you should try Converting Kate. It is an amazing author. Below are a few books/authors that, being a fantasy geek, I recommend.
1)Tolkien, anything by Tolkien.
2)Christopher Paolini's Eragon and Eldest. He finished writing Eragon when he was only 16 but it is amazing!!!
3)Phillip Pullman. They are making a movie about these and they probably will mess it up but the books are great anyway.
4) The Count of Monte Cristo. Okay, not a fantasy but still one of my all time favorites.
5)The Mysterious Benedict Society, A different brand of fantasy, definetly in my top three.
6) Terry Pratchett!!!! His books are truly hilarious!
7)The Dark Lord of Derkholm, by Dianne Winne Jones. Strangely enough there isn't really a dark lord in this book. Very funny.
8)T.A. Barron, starting with The Lost Years of Merlin
9) K.M. Grant is great if you love horses. She has a trilogy out, Blood Red horse, Green Jasper, and Blaze of Silver. I have al her books, and they're autographed!
10)Beastly, a remade fairtale of Beauty and the Beast, from the guy's point of veiw and in modern times.

You could read these, some are not animal books but here they are:
The Skin I'm in by Sharon G. Flake
The sisterhood of the traveling pants by Ann Brashares
Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson
Red Dog by Bill Wallace
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
The cricket in Times Square by George Selden
Terrier in the Tinsel by Ben M. Baglio
How the Garcia Girls lost their accent by Julia alvarez (my favorite book)
Do some online research on these and read the description and see if you like any of them. Hope this helps

Check out Terry Pratchett. He writes satiric fantasy. He does touch on religion in some of his books, but he treats it gently.
