Mixed race kids have a tough time with identity when it comes to how society See's them.Their skin is not white so a lot of white society views them as black.Their skin is not dark enough so some of the black community views them not as white but not black enough. My children are mixed race and have had countless problems with other people's opinion of them.My kid's also do not like the opinion that their heritage is disregarded when people say stupid things like why label yourselves. It is not a label,it is who they are. They would rather others see their colour and heritage than ignore or minimise it.They and I hate the opinion of others who say i don't see a colour. It's bullshit.A person's colour is an indication of their roots and whilst a person's colour is not an absolute definitive description of what that person is all about it is something so important it should never be gotten wrong.Their white heritage is just as important to them as their black heritage and we find the white side is ignored more.My eldest is in university and his dissertation is on being mixed race.He choose this as a result of how the black and white community veiw him and how this has impacted on him and shaped his life.It makes interesting reading. We live in an age of rich diversity and the numbers of mixed race children are the fastest growing ethnicity in the UK.People should educate themselves about diversity but they don't want to.Good question.
Edit.I have just read the other answers and i agree with the observation that black people will accept mixed race people more than white people.
It's like they say we see you're black heritage mixed with you're white heritage. so you are one of us.
White people say we see you're black heritage only so you are NOT one of us.The white side is usually as i say disregarded.

who knows what to call anybody any more, it's so overly PC! I think unless people specify what they want to be called it's unfair to say something is wrong. If I see someone who is mixed race but they have dark skin I often think they are black. its not racism, i simply cannot tell the difference between someone who is half black and something else and someone who has 2 black parents. Because there are so many colours and cultures I cannot possibly know all the ins and outs and often think they are black. give us a break, white is white but there many lovely different shades of darker skins that we just don't know by sight.

Society does not class mixed race people as black.
No it would not be right, it would be a mistake if they did.

There are alot of mixed raced people. It's not only if you are mixed with black and white. You could be asian and white, hispanic and chinese. You have to specify what you mean by mixed race. Alot of people just assume that whenever you say mixed you mean black and white which is so wrong.

i thought this issue had been resolved already
society does not classify them as black
census takers in the 2000 census actively encouraged mixed race people to choose the race of the mother
every legal document, employment application, etc that i have seen now has the extra designation OTHER with most having room to write information in
the terms biracial and multiracial are often heard
get a clue
personally, i don't want anybody in my race who doesn't want to be
or those who use it for convenience

I am mixed(black&white) and I don't group myself with either races. Some people feel that they need to put themselves with certain groups, but you really don't have to.

no. Let the child decide what they want to be called.
I was watching a program about how Americans feel about Barack Obama, and was interested in why black americans say he is 'acting' white. HELLO - his mother, the woman that raised him from birth, is WHITE, therefore he is not acting, he is simply being himself. A mixture of black Kenyan and White American.

We are all of mixed race my son,it's the differences that unite us.The colour of someones skin is just one aspect of who they are.People who don't feel secure enough in themselves like to point to the 'differences' in others,it makes them feel safer and in this ever changing world you will always find insecure people.

Thats just the way society has always labeled it. one drop and ur black. black people are more acceptig to interracial people anyway than white people are. many would not consider you white if you have exotic features or a cultural background.
