Some names are acceptable when named after cars and places--and some are just pushing it. My best friends name is India, and I am use to it now so I couldn't say it's 'out there'. I think it's a pretty name though. I have another friend named Mercedes, that has become quite popular over the years. There are a lot of acceptable names though, I find at least.
Girls:
Mercedes, India, Asia, Georgia, Kenya
Boys:
Dallas..hmm actually I don't know any others haha

But I still haven't answered you--people name their children after cars+places because they want something original, yet not too extravagant. Maybe it's to commemorate something. Like if they were married in Brooklyn, they may name their daughter that. Or if someone has a freakish obsession with Porch's, that will be their kids name. I also know a girl name Porch. It could be worse, they could name her Apple. :)

Some parents believe they must give their baby a very different name. I'm sure they are thinking they want a name as special and unique as their new baby will be. I can't blame them for thinking that.

But then they sometimes come up names so different that they are odd. I suggest that new parents think carefully back to their own childhoods and the way that some kids could be cruel to others for no more reason than the other child had an offbeat name.

You don't want to choose a name so well linked with a product, city/state/country or celebrity that the child will be mocked and teased in about 7-15 years. Traditional names often got to be so common because they have deeper meanings and are easier to spell and say.

Lots of those cars, cities and states were named for people in the fist place, like Virginia was named for Queen Elizabeth I. Nobody thought Virginia Woolf;s name was trashy. It all has to do with personal preference, I see no harm in naming a baby boy Austin over Brody. And Paris is a classic name, from the Trojan War, not the city...

they think the names are special and unique, they might have an emotional bond to the places, they might like the sound of it... or they are just plain stupid.
there are some names that are really over the top.
Imagine naming the child Ferrari or Lamborghini?? and there are people who would do that to their child.
on the other hand names like
AMERICA
KENYA
AUSTIN
LONDON
JAMAICA
can sound nice with a last name that flows with it.
MERCEDES is an old Spanish girl name, so it was the other way round... the car was named after Benz' daughter. the nickname for Mercedes is Merche

Kia and Lexus (Short for Alexis) were names before they were cars.

As far as cities and states go, they name people after places they like. I suspect no one has named their child Hoboken.

I am Virginia - never liked it much until a few years ago I asked my Dad why I was named Virginia and found out he liked it a lot and he was the one who picked it. That made me like it more.

Because they are nice names and they like them. Not to mention that if you look hard enough you will always find something that shares the same name as your child.
