I understand that it makes it illegal for a soldier to be housed in someone's home during peacetime, and legal during wartime only under governmental terms (and if the homeowner consents to it), but how do I write a 2 page essay about it?

If anyone has any ideas for me to research further (like cases that pertain to it), that would be incredibly helpful.

Thaaaank you =)

P.S. Please, I don't want a paragraph or anything. I don't want people to do my homework for me! Well, actually that'd be awesome but unrealistic and selfish, lol. I just need some help ...

Three things you may want to write about... 1st, amendment was originally written because of the force used by British soldiars during the American Revolution. 2nd, how since the passing of the amendment in 1790 it was repeatedly violated in both the War of 1812 and the Civil War... even though the Union did not official declare war on the confederate states, troops still forced their way into homes. 3nd, there was a federal case, Engblom v. Carey, decided by the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1982, involving a ruling on the 3rd amendment specifically related to the housing a the National Guard during a prison guard strike.

Good Luck...

Talk about the history behind it. Talk about how boarding of British troops was one of the reasons behind the Revolution. Then also talk about how it is seen as protecting the right of privacy in the home against any government intrusions, not just boarding of troops.

There are no cases on it. The only one that mentions it is Griswold v. Connecticut which dealt with the use of contraceptives; Justice Douglas mentioned it (along with other amendments) while discussing the right to privacy (e.g. our homes are incredibly private areas).
