I am tight on money, but I'm trying to get a low cost laptop. I only need this computer for basic usuage (word, internet, etc.) (on the internet the most complicated site I go to is pandora)

I know how processors rate, and I know which ones are good- but I want to know. How low could I go and not be irritated by the speed. I have a VERY good desktop- but it lacks that laptop transport quality.

I recently used a Pentium M with 1GB of RAM that satisfied me, however, that was connected to a network and I doubt that left me an accurate perception of its speed.

I think you should buy a Pentium Dual core, with abundance of RAM... as it will be much more responsive...

There are couple of options below.. if u don't mind taking a recertified machine than the first option is the best... plenty of RAM, good processor and good review... If you like name brand then go with second option... good processor and RAM and little high price but with in reasonable limit.. If u want to keep it dirt cheap with good option than u have to go with no brand.. which is the third option..

The normal sequence of CPU performance in Laptop is

Pentium M < Pentium Dual Core < Core Duo < Core 2 Duo..

My own recommendation will be first option..

i'm a huge laptop gamer. the backside stats i could desire to probably evaluate making an investment into could be: - 1GB of Ram - AMD a million.8GHZ - CD burner... a minimum of 48x study, - 17" flat panel -nvidia 256mb video - 120GB stressful tension... even that, i might replenish in some days -i won't and could not use something decrease than a cable connection. DSL is lots too gradual for me. those are my minimum specs because of the fact my video games might run, yet somewhat in this technique.

AMD Turion. Good performance I think, its 2 generations back right before dual cores came out. You'll be happy with that. I think I saw a laptop on sale at compusa a while back with dual core processor at 400 bucks. What's your budget?

The guy above is right though, RAM is extremely important.

I think that memory (RAM) affects a lot more the performance than the procesor (unless you play advanced games, do graphic intensive applications or math stuff).

If you have tested the Pentium M with 1Gb RAM it might be more than enough.

They have a few good ones at Walmart for around 500 or more. But the best always cost the most..
