The first is the original game and Burning Crusades is the expansion that gives extra stuff like going over level 60, new starting races and of course with higher level comes better goodies.
The game is great by the way, however, very addicting. You can end up spending way too many hours in front of your computer so pace yourself. Do say we didn't warn you...
I would say start with the original and give it a try first before you make too much of a costly investment. Remember you do have to pay a monthly subscription fee. Then if you keep wanting to spend every wakening moment of your life making that night elf hunter level 70 then go ahead and buy Burning Crusades then. Good luck!!!

All you REALLY need to play is World of Warcraft (WoW) itself. Burning Crusades is an OPTIONAL expansion pack.
You can not play with just Burning Crusade, you have to have WoW first. BC add mostly end-game content, but there are a few things available to new players in it.

You need the original, which will run you about 15 bucks a month. You really only need Burning crusade to get to level 70.

first thing i would do, if you have never played is to get a trial, either from a friend that plays of buy it from a store that sells computer games, or off of blizzards website. Then if you decide that you like the game, they just came out with a battlechest that allows you to buy both the expansion and the orignal in one buy saving you like 10 bucks. But also as mentioned in previous answers the game is addicting. as for how long it takes you to get from 1-70, its all up to you. i know people that can go from 1-70 in a few days or so, but it can if you like to take your time, take as much time as you want

you can play without buying anything, download it from the blizzard sight. It takes forever to download though, and you get a 10 or 14 day trial. If I had to do it again, I would go to wal-mart and buy the trial for 1.99, and download it from the CD's. There is a monthly fee also, that people don't tell you about, that has to be paid to play in the "world"

You have to buy WoW and then you can play the game...however if you want to level to 70 and play the new races you will have to buy the BC expansion also.
BC is only an expansion and is not a stand alone game on its own

download the free trail first...checkout the demos of the Warcraft too, the nature of the game "warcraft" is alluded to through out the game "world of warcraft"...then once you reach the level cap you can be as horribly disappointed as I was to find out there is no opportunity for strategy in the game, even though the dialog from the npc's and the Battle ground ramblings of the die hard 'quest-alot' game players continuously suggests it does.

You need the original first and if you want the 60+ levels and new content you need the exp. BC. You will need time cards or pay with a CC or paypal.
