This one sheep on the news wasn't sheered for 3 years and couldn't walk because of it's excess wool. I was wondering what sheep did before people came along to cut their wool for them. Weird question i know....

Just like every other animal that man raises, he has changed the genetics and bred for the extreme. Wild sheep don't grow wool and not shed it naturally for years on end.
Same thing for dairy cows - they don't naturally have gigantic udders and produce gobs of milk far in excess of what a calf or even twins could consume. They have been bred to produce more so that man can maximize the profit from the animal.

They rubbed up against rough tree bark and thorn bushes to get rid of some of the excess wool. Seriously.

It stops growing at a certain point, that sheep just had an oddity about it because it was used to being it's wool cut.

Naturally they shed it, but now theyve become instinctlly used to ppl shaving them, just like cows used to have no problem with milk, but now if u dont milk them its very dangerous
