How would I write this problem out and solve it?
(I'm currently taking algebra, and I just don't get this. D:)
Thank you!

There are eight fewer students in the Chess Club than on the Track Team, and there are only half as many students on the Ecology Force as in the Chess Club. How many students are in each group f there are 68 students in all and each student participates in one one of the activities?

track team = x (32)
chess club = x - 8 (24)
ecology force = .5(x - 8) = .5x - 4 (12)

x + x - 8 + .5x - 4 = 68
2.5x - 12 = 68
2.5x = 80
x = 32

OK, let the number of students in the chess club be "x". The number of students on the track team would be "x+8" and the number in the ecology force would be "1/2 x" Then you write it out as an equation: x+x+8+1/2x = 68. Simplify and you have 2 1/2x +8 = 68 Take 8 from both sides and you have
21/2X = 60. Divide 60 by 2 1/2 and you get 24 in the chess club, 32 on the track team, and 12 in the Eco Force. Get it?

OK let's begin. For this problem the following abbreviations will be used:
C = Chess Club
T = Track Team
E = Ecology Force

C = T - 8 or C + 8 = T
C = 2E or C/2 = E
C + T + E = 68

So substituting for T and E in the above we get
C + (C + 8) + C/2 = 68

Multiply both sides by 2 and we get

2C + 2C + 16 + C = 136 or

5C + 16 = 136 or

5C = 120 or

C = 24 so substituting in the above equations we get

24 = T - 8 or

T = 32 and

2E = 24 or

E = 12 so we plug these values into the third equation to check them:

24 + 32 + 12 = 68 so now know the correct values

C = 24, T = 32, E = 12

I hope this helps.

define some variables
c = number of students in chess club
t = number of students on track team
e = number of students on ecology force

now rewrite the statements mathematically:
There are eight fewer students in the Chess Club than on the Track Team
c=t-8 (or equivalently t=c+8)
think it through and make sure this equation makes sense to you. we are told chess has fewer students than track
so c must be less than t. our equation says c=t-8. if you subtract a number (8) from t, than you will get a smaller number.

there are only half as many students on the Ecology Force as in the Chess Club
which says ecology has half as many as chess
e=c/2

if there are 68 students in all and each student participates in only one of the activities
c+t+e=68

so now you have 3 equations involving the 3 unknown variables. solve using whichever method is easiest for you.

t=c+8
e=c/2
c+t+e=68

you can use the first two equations to substitute into the third:
c + (c+8) + (c/2) = 68
5c/2=60
c = 2*60/5=2*12=24
now you know c, so find t and e
t=c+8=24+8=32
e=c/2=24/2=12

Chess Club has 15
Track Team has 23
Ecology Force has 30
Total: 68.
Now the hard part is writing the equation. How about
Y=X + (X+8) + (X2)
I'm not an algebra smartie, but I'm good at logic problems.
